History & Hauntings:
Established in 1861 and built a year later, the Greene County Almshouse sits in the quiet countryside of Waynesburg, PA. The poor farm was created to care for those who couldn’t care for themselves, had no income, or had nowhere else to go.
In 1863, a grand jury visited and found 45 inmates “in good spirits,” with living conditions exceptionally well-maintained and medical care provided by an on-site physician. By 1875, the poor farm had fallen into disrepair. Overcrowding, dilapidation, vermin, poor ventilation, and the admission of “insane” persons worsened conditions dramatically. In 1886, structural improvements were made, but the steward at the time, William B. Cage, was infamous for his cruelty. Inmates were routinely chained to basement walls, forced to…
